Sarah Beckcom — y mother passed on May 24th after a month in hospice. We had done our research and found Epting to be the place we would call when the time came. She passed at 9am and we finally had said our goodbyes and called them around They promptly arrived around 30 minutes later We assumed Read more they were there to get the layout of the house and do paper work but then Andrew said it would just be him.
He said he typically gets help removing the body from the coroner but we told him she had already left. We asked if he could go get someone to help and he said he wouldn't be able to come back with another person till later that evening or the next morning, 24 hours after her passing. He then asked if we would be able to help get her onto the stretcher. I was appalled and said we would not remember our mother that way. He again stated that he wouldn't be able to return till the evening if not the next day at which point I called my husband to come help.
He helped carry my mothers body out into the hall and place her on the stretcher then down the walkway so she didnt "slip off the end" MY MOM. Over the next 3 weeks I called several times to discuss on the phone with Ricky and was always told by Andrew that he was out to lunch, busy, on vacation, or with a family.
I finally reached someone other than Andrew and calmly told him my dilemma. He told me that was policy and they didn't typically bring 2 people or have anyone available to help. No "I'm so sorry for you loss" no "let me get your name and have Ricky call you" no "we will look into this or change the policy" no sorry at all or apology.
I am appalled that this is how they are running their business. I have spoken to several other funeral directors and cemeteries and all of them have been appalled as well saying that is not normal and they always have someone on call for such circumstances. I will never recommend Epting to anyone and hope everyone thinks twice about calling them for their services.
The last memory I have of my mother is this Andrew guy and my husband grabbing a sheet off her bed, wrapping her up, and carrying her out of the bedroom then wheeling her down the sidewalk while my husband stood of the opposite end so she didn't "fall off".
