All I know is that 2K are to issue a statement of some sort regarding issues raised in the review. Just think of this as a review now in progress. If things remain unchanged so will my opinion. Real respectful guys! How nice of you to annoy your reviewers by editing their work behind their back. Completely ridiculous as far as journalism is concerned.
Is that against the direction of the industry? Not just gaming journalism, but modern journalism as a whole. I had an editor take a hatchet to a review I did so they could alter the score I gave it…all behind my back. When I found out I quit and demanded my name off the revised review. Have you got a link to the review or what not? Because this sounds like the kind of story quite a few people would be interested in hearing about, especially folks like Larry Bundy Jr or SidAlpha.
Wait, they turned the first article into the second? The two articles are literally nothing like each other. You get Backbone. Backbone is a game that puts you in the boots of private investigator Howard Lotor, a racoon detective in a world where mammals sans humanity live together in a city.
It is a metropolis where division by wealth and Kind an allegory for race set a background for the events that Backbone weaves its way through. There is a particular scene with water filling the screen as Howard walks the street which looks really good. The pixel art itself is decent and full of colour, which different districts of the city having signature looks.
The visual design of Backbone far outshines many of the other elements. The prologue introduces different elements to Backbone, including puzzles and stealth to avoid enemies, as well as the multiple choice conversations that you use to steer your way through the story and build relationships with other characters. However, while Backbone starts off strong it falters through the remaining acts, which in total last a few hours.
Unlike many other adventure games there is no real element of picking things out the inventory and figuring out what will work. If you have the correct tool in the inventory Howard will automatically use it.
There are a couple of stealth sections, but they are very simple to sneak through and do not last long either. Using powers such as increased strength and invisibility shook up deathmatches, introducing new ways for people to play. With gunplay and presentation being on point, this should have been a coming of age title for arena shooters. That perception marred what was actually a fun and frenetic suite of online game modes.
Hero shooters such as Overwatch and Paladins would carry the torch for arena shooters into the modern age. However, that extra layer of strategy — especially when it comes to team compositions — make these games arguably more involving and engaging to watch.
With Epic still raking it in thanks to Fortnite, the chances of there being a new Unreal Tournament in the pipeline seem pretty slim. The company recently attempted to reboot the series with a focus on player-created content and assets. What about id Software and Quake? This would seem like an open goal if not for the fact that Quake Champions had tried to do the same not that long ago. With Bethesda now owned by Microsoft, could this stop Quake from making a return?
It has an unabashed classic style that, for many younger gamers, will be their first exposure to the genre. Just when we thought traditional arena shooters were long done, along came Splitgate with its big killer twist, allowing players to create Portal-like gates during matches. Both games are currently free-to-play and have already massed millions of players between them. The stage is now set for a new generation of arena shooters and hopefully more will join them while other games look to reinvent the FPS in new and interesting ways.
Another one with a twist is Screencheat. You must be logged in to post a comment.
