The original Crysis was praised heavily for its insane graphics but lacked on the gameplay front. The future installments Crysis 2 and 3 have since rectified these concerns making them great FPS games.
The games are standalone for the most part not requiring you to play previous installments. While the game might lack some similarities to Halo you can't deny that it is one of the best FPS games available. I've had an on and off relationship with the Call of Duty franchise like many gamers. I found some games amazing while others fell short of the mark.
Likewise I found some of the multiplayer options for some of the games lacking which turned me off. Starting with the latest Call of Duty game is always your best bet since this ensures you have a large community available for multiplayer to play with.
StarCraft II is featured at the end of this page for people who are looking for games like Halo Wars. StarCraft II is published by Blizzard so you know the game has had thousands and thousands of hours poured into its development.
The game has been praised by critics for its campaign gameplay and features that allows players to easily connect, chat and compete with other StarCraft players.
